Local MP is welcomed by staff and students this morning during a visit to Whitworth Park Academy.
Dehenna Davison, MP for Bishop Auckland, joined staff and students at Whitworth Park Academy this morning for a tour and class.
Following the visit, Dehenna said:
“It was great to meet David and his students today. The school is in excellent hands with David and his team at the helm to turn things around. Following their struggles a few years ago, it is incredible seeing how far the school and students have come.
“Speaking to the students, their enthusiasm for learning was so obvious - and I particularly enjoyed seeing the students working on their GCSE ‘Under the sea’ artwork.
“Getting the chance to speak to the staff team was particularly important as it gave us the opportunity to talk face to face about some of the challenges schools are facing, particularly around recruitment.
“I look forward to working with David and the team to ensure Whitworth Park is able to keep going from strength to strength and keep providing quality education to allow our young people to aspire and flourish.”
Whitworth Park Academy, located in Spennymoor, offers students ages eleven to sixteen high-quality teaching whilst encouraging learners of every ability and type to be involved in managing their own progress towards becoming motivated, independent and high achieving students.
Headteacher David Stone said,
“It was great to host Dehenna to our school this morning and it was very enjoyable for both the staff and pupils. I hope Dehenna found it useful to see a Secondary School in her constituency and recognises the journey that we are on. Here at Whitworth Park we have come a long way in the last three years. We’ve gone from a struggling school to one with hugely improved results and a learning ethos that challenges all its learners to achieve the very best that they can be.
In addition, the culture of the school, especially the attitude of the students, has improved immeasurably and it was a pleasure to invite Dehenna to see and experience that today. I am very grateful for her taking the time out of her busy schedule to join us for a few hours today.”
