Dehenna Davison MP went back to school this afternoon with a trip to Whitworth Park Academy in Spennymoor. There, she met headteacher David Stone, from whom she learnt about the Academy's recent Ofsted success and their community work.
At the end of last year, Whitworth Park received a "Good" rating in their most recent Ofsted report. Out of the four ratings that schools can receive (Inadequate, Satisfactory, Good and Outstanding), the result was a two-grade increase on their previous "Inadequate" rating. It comes after last year's GCSE cohort achieved the school's best ever exam results, despite the impact of the pandemic on their learning. No expense was made to the Academy's outreach work either, with five of the school's year groups recently filling a wheelie bin's worth of food each to donate to foodbanks.
On her visit, Davison learnt about the work that had gone into achieving this huge leap in quality. She said: "The improvement in standards at Whitworth Park is in no small part down to the efforts of the students and staff here. David Stone has done a fantastic job as headteacher, and it is great that children in Bishop Auckland have the opportunity to learn at an institution on the rise. Well done Whitworth!"
