Bishop Auckland MP, Dehenna Davison, joins Teesdale Sailing & Watersports Club on the waters.
Members of Teesdale Sailing and Watersports Club welcomed back Dehenna Davison MP to their club this weekend, as she took to the waters.
Dehenna toured the new facilities, previously spoken about during her last visit in August last year and joined the Saturday class out on the water for some sailing experience. Dehenna said:
“It was great to see Richard, Anthony and Imogen again this weekend and see the club’s new boat store house and changing rooms. Whilst there we spoke about their plans to expand further and how things have changed since my last visit in August last year, as well as meeting their fab Saturday class who completely showed me up with their amazing sailing skills.
“As someone who has very little sailing experience, I was nervous to get out on the waters, but with some training from Richard and a little help from Anthony I was able to sail around and even managed to not capsize. I hope to be back sailing soon!”
As well as getting out on Grassholme reservoir, Dehenna presented the junior sailors with certificates to mark their achievements.
Imogen Gibb, the club’s RYA Principal said “We very much enjoyed showing Dehenna the new boats in use, and thank her for presenting RYA certificates to the children”.
“It was an excellent opportunity to discuss with Dehenna some of the difficulties that small sports clubs like ours face” said club Commodore Anthony Tubbs., “Especially as we come out of lockdown and look to grow the club. We are aware that people are looking for outdoor Covid safe activities; the watersports that we cater for fulfil this need, but of course it is expensive for the club to do this.
“No visit to the club would be complete without a trip on the water. Dehenna (who has never sailed before) gamely got into a boat with the Commodore and went for a sail. Before long she was on the helm. “Dehenna quickly learnt the ropes and steered with assurance” commented Mr Tubbs. “We have a double-handed race coming up soon so if anyone needs a crew...”
