Dehenna Davison MP visited Bishop Auckland fire station on Friday for a regular catch-up with local firefighters. The trip proved a fantastic opportunity for the MP to see what had changed at the station since her last visit, and for firefighters to raise the issues affecting their service.
Davison was joined by local Woodhouse Close ward Councillors Joanne Howey and Cathy Hunt, who represent the fire station's ward. Together, they received a tour of the facilities and discussed funding for the service.
Davison said "When you think of firefighters, you tend to think of them tackling huge blazes, but they do so much more, whether it be keeping us safe during Storm Arwen, rescuing animals in danger, attending road traffic collisions, or getting out in the community to help prevent fires. I try and use any chance I can to thank them for their service, and to discuss the successes and challenges they have. Off the back of this, I will be writing to the Minister of State for Crime, Policing and Fire to raise concerns about regional disparities in funding."
Councillor Howey added "I loved visiting our local firefighters and they were so courteous and proud in showing us round their facilities. The staff reiterated the importance of supporting the service both in words and in action, which I hope is something that Durham County Council will hear loud and clear."
